Flamingo Vintage Kilo made an appearance on October 28, 2022, at the “080 Reborn” fashion show, part of the 080 Barcelona Fashion runway, the first runway in the world dedicated to showcasing second-hand clothing.
080 Reborn is a collection created with 100% second-hand clothing. It is an initiative carried out by the Waste Agency of Catalonia, the Catalonia Fashion Consortium, and Girbau LAB to promote circular fashion.
This sector initiative is one of the pilot actions of the circular economy chosen by the European Union within the Interreg Europe CircE project for its innovative approach and potential to be replicated in other territories.
What is Circular Fashion?
Circular fashion is the fundamental proposal put forward to achieve sustainable fashion in an industry that has been categorized as the second most polluting in the world. It could be said that it is a way of rethinking fashion.
Circular fashion is based on a production system founded on the circular economy, where the goal is to optimize existing processes, create new ones, promote the conscious use of resources, and reduce the impact of waste on the environment.
The great textile landfills that have been created around the world, such as in Atacama, Ghana, are just some of the names that top the list when talking about clothing dumps globally. They are true graveyards of used clothing that arrive, mostly from the United States, Europe, or Asia.
Hence, the need for this industry to become sustainable and environmentally friendly cannot remain merely a wish.
The Pact for Circular Fashion, signed in May 2022, is a voluntary commitment among institutions and companies from different links in the textile value chain of Catalonia that facilitates circularity measures by promoting collaborative projects like «080 Reborn,» which seeks to:
Increase awareness when creating a design.
Prioritize techniques that lead to zero waste, fair trade when creating the design or marketing strategy for the garment.
Propose careful observation of the process to identify, visualize, and correct flaws.
Challenge fast fashion and its linear production method that leads to: production-consumption-disposal, to rethink more sustainable alternatives that are viable over time.
